Landis Won TdF 2006 - The Review

Floyd Landis won Tour de France 2006, beating Oscar Pereiro by 57 seconds. Ahh, another American. Before him, Greg LeMond won in 1989 & 1990 while Lance Armstrong won 7 times, 1999-2005. And yeah, all 3 names begin with 'L', LeMond, Lance & Landis! In this edition, without the greats Armstrong, Ullrich, Basso, Vinokourov & Heras, we saw the battle between Landis & Pereiro. The 1st week of the race saw the yellow jersey had been exchanged among the sprinters & the time-triallists. On July 13, after Stage 11, it was the 1st time Landis worn the yellow jersey. After a successful breakaway in Stage 13, Pereiro took over the jersey from Landis. Before that stage, he was almost 29 minutes behind Landis. Bizarre!!! Landis took back the maillot jaune from Pereiro after Stage 15. The next stage (Stage 16) saw Landis lost 8 minutes from Pereiro who regained the yellow jersey. 8 minutes behind, impossible for Landis to win! But Landis proved the critics wrong. The next day, his Stage 17 victory put him back in contention when he finished 7 minutes faster than Pereiro. Pereiro still kept the yellow jersey but Landis just half-a-minute behind. In the time-trial of Stage 19, Landis who theorically the better time-triallist between the duo, finished 1 & a half minute faster than Pereiro & took back the maillot jaune. It stayed until they all arrived at the Champs-Elysées. Robbie McEwen won the green jersey, his 3rd, as the best sprinter. Michael Rasmussen defended his polka-dot jersey, as the best climber. Damiano Cunego won the white jersey as the best young rider while the best team award went to my favourite team, the magenta T-Mobile!!!

Hayden won the MotoGP US GP at Laguna Seca. His teammate, Pedrosa finished 2nd while Melandri finished 3rd. Rossi The Doctor, didn't finished the race because of mechanical problems.

MotoGP current standing:

1. Hayden - 194 points
2. Pedrosa - 160 points
3. Melandri - 150 points
4. Rossi - 143 points
